Excited about the dayyyyy!! I don’t know if it was starting the day with greens or the fact that I sent in the first draft of my article last night (or the sunshine!) but I am excited. [Speaking of green, you need to listen to this Brendan James song: Green.]
Green smoothie rockin it!
The Mix
- 1/2 banana
- 3/4 cup milk
- 2 big handfuls spinach
- 1/4 cup raw rolled oats
- 1/2 scoop Vega Choc-a-Lot
- 1 tbsp flax
- Ancient Granola topping
The key for winter smoothies is nothing comes from the freezer! This was just cooler than room temp (because the milk was the only cold item) so it was totally tolerable on a cool morning.
Lagunitas represent!
Have you seen the new Conan?
Matt and I are huge fans, and I’m glad he is back! I Tweet him all the time, but I’ve yet to receive a response (I hear he doesn’t Tweet back?!) Wouldn’t it be fun if he invited me to take the saltine challenge with him!? The new TBS show is on behind me as I’m blogging (was recorded last night), and it’s the same as it used to be, which makes me happy.
And with that, onward!
Samantha @ Bikini Birthday says
I loved looking at your wedding pics on Brides Up North today 🙂
Jessica @ How Sweet It Is says
I actually like when smoothies aren’t super cold often because I’m not a fan of foods at extreme temperatures. They hurt my teeth!
Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat says
I also had a green smoothie this morning but I used frozen spinach and I was definitely shivering after!! It was just wayyy too good to not finish. Have a great day!
Estela @ Weekly Bite says
I heart Conan!! I DVR’rd his show last night 🙂
Your smoothie presentation is gorgeous 🙂
Camille says
You should start a campaign for Conan to challenge you to the Saltine Challenge! Heck, that’s how Betty White got to host SNL!
Lauren says
I always get soo confused when you show Brendan James, because he reminds me so much of an actor, but I could never put my finger on. Now I’ve finally got it! Bryan Greenberg:

Tina @ Faith Fitness Fun says
I still eat cold smoothies in winter but have a hot cup of coffee alongside them. I guess kind of like how I will still eat soups and chili in the summer. LOL
Amanda says
Brendan James is amazing, glad to hear someone else listens to him. Have you heard his Hero’s Song?
Absolutely amazing!! Have a good day!

grocery goddess jen says
I’m glad Conan’s back, too, not that I ever stay up to watch it 🙂 I always crack up when I see something about “Team Coco” because my cat’s name is Coconut, and we call her “Coco” for short. If only she were hosting a late night TV show and making millions…
Jessa says
Hey Kath!
More a comment on your previous post about your husband’s brewing basement….I saw last night on TV an ad for a new TV show on the discovery channel called Brewing Masters, where the guy goes all around the world to add special ingredients to make new beer flavors. Made me think of you guys!
Kath says
We’re excited about it!
Meg says
Mmm nothing like starting a good Thursday with a bowl of nutritious greens 😀
Enjoy your day, Kath!
Michele @ Healthy Cultivations says
I really like starting my mornings with a green monster. It seems to help me feel good throughout the morning both physically and mentally to know that I’ve gotten some greens in already.

Christin@purplebirdblog says
I loooooove Conan but we don’t have cable. I’ll have to see if the episodes are available online!
Jessica says
Have you ever gotten granola from the Mix My Granola? I have been meaning to try it since I can never get the exact mix I want from the grocery stores.

Jamie @ Food in Real Life says
What a pretty green smoothie. I was wondering about drinking smoothies in the cold weather just as you explained how you do it. Are you a mind reader? 🙂 Have a great day!
emily says
Last time I was in Boston I had a Conan spotting whilst walking by a cafe. We didn’t want to bother him, but my guy friend looked so excited that Conan actually noticed us and laughed! Although then we went to the cafe for brunch the next day (and requested the same table he was at) and the food sort of sucked.. 😉
Veggies, Cake and Cocktails says
I really like the new Conan show. I especially like that the guests are not “preped” before hand so you never know what’s going to happen!
Kelly says
I like to stick to the frozen fruits even in the winter. My trick is that I only drink/eat smoothies after an early morning workout. I’m so sweaty, I gladly welcome some cold green refreshment. 🙂
lynn (The Actors Diet) says
i used to babysit for andy, conan’s sidekick! love them both.
Kath says
For a moment I thought you meant you babysat Andy himself!! I was thinking there is no way you are that old…or he is that young… confusion…then ah-ha! VERY COOL!
Mary (What's Cookin' with Mary) says
I haven’t had a green smoothie in weeks… Those pictures have me craving one now! Hard to want one this time of year as the weather turns cooler, but after reading Kelly’s comment I agree… Would probably be better after a workout than first thing for breakfast. All I want are warm things ;P
Katie (The Boston Marathoner) says
This looks fabulous- I just got my wisdom teeth yanked a week ago and I’m beyond tired of mashed potatoes and pudding. This will be dinner tonight!
Mads says
Oh man, I’m lovin Conan. I always have and I suppose I will until he retires.
Also, that green monster jar thing looks like I need a taste!
Maddie (Healthy Maddie) says
Great idea for not using frozen fruits in green smoothies! I love having green smoothies durin the winer but am always freezing after drinking them.
jenna says

Kath says
Yes, fond memories. I miss that apt!
Kiran says
I love green smoothies. So fresh, delicious and amazing in any season. Conan rocks!
Samantha Bellinger says
That grapefruit looks amazing! You really had that for 3 weeks and it still looks like juicy/delicious?!? What is your secret?
Kath says
I think it was just a good one from the start! I pick ones that are heavy and feel like they have thin skin. I think thin skin is key..
shorty says
SO my 14yr old and myself tried the saltine challenge. I have to say it was MUCH harder than I thought. I was only able to finish four but my son finished with 14 seconds to spare!!!!!!!!!! He put all 6 in his mouth at one time:) Goes to show you teenagers don’t taste the food they eat, they just bite and swallow!hehe I am going to have to have my hubs try it when he gets home;)
Kath says
WOW. Need to see the video of that one!!
Christena says
Funny — today is a Brendan James day for me! I listened to Green on my way too and from work and when I got home, his CD (that I ordered) was waiting in my mailbox! Then I read this post! I sound like a Brendan James creeper, but seriously Green is one of my favorite songs EVER!
Errign says
Russell Brand on Conan last night was SO funny!
Lindsay says
I thought you said you needed my love to keep you warm?
I say, I say, I got my BANDAGES to keep me warm!
Oh please, please tell me your title references that old cartoon with the big rooster! Maybe? Anyone?
…
Kath says
Clueless….
I was listening to the Xmas song when I typed this!
Hannah says
I love how vibrantly green that is! I need to get a blender soon!!
Rachelle says
How does the green smoothie taste? I like spinach on a salad, but I am weary in a smoothie. Does it taste dirt and green like?
OMG, SO JEALOUS of that pumpkin spice balsamic!!!
DROOL!
Kath says
Like banana!
jenna says
as you can see i am just catching up on allll of your past posts since I have just been crazy busy with school and such and not able to read like i wanted to and like i did in the summer when i had some time 😉 hah!
Christine says
Hi Kath — A bit late to the party here I see, but just wanted to let you know it was delicious. So delicious in fact, that I translated and used the recipe on my danish blog at this breakfast-smoothie rundown http://www.nope.dk/smoothies-morgenmad.html
I didn’t forget to credit you with a link back, so hopefully you won’t mind too much 😉
